Information for International Applicants to the 2015 PhD Programme

Introduction

The China-EU School of Law at the China University of Political Science and Law (CESL) was founded in September 2008. It is the first law school to be approved by the Ministry of Education under the Regulations of the PRC on Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools. Prior to CESL's establishment, Premier Wen Jiabao had high expectations, expressing his hope that "CESL will educate a great cohort of talented legal professionals equipped with knowledge spanning both Chinese and Western law."
CESL has recruited 27 doctoral students from 2009 to 2014, including 25 Mainland Chinese, 1 Taiwanese, and 1 international.

Curriculum and faculty

The CESL PhD programme is designed to provide an overview of China’s legal system following the 1978 market reforms. Classes will also be specialized by doctoral supervisors in the students’ area of specialization. Full-time professors are from CUPL, while part-time professors are outstanding scholars from renowned universities in Beijing, Taipei and the United States.

Duration of study: three years.

Degree conferred: on graduation students will be awarded a doctorate from CUPL.

Application Procedure

Entry requirements

Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the People's Republic of China and have obtained, or be expected to obtain a master's in law or its equivalent, as well as possess a good knowledge of Chinese prior to registration.

Documents required:
1. Passport (copy).
2. Completed
application form.
3. Research proposal (Chinese or English).
4. List of publications (including title, date of publication, periodical or publisher).
5. Letter of recommendation written by a professor from a university where the applicant has previously studied. A PDF of the signed recommendation letter should be emailed to
admission_cesl@cupl.edu.cn by the professor.
6. Degree certificate (copy) and an English translation.
7. Academic transcript showing applicant's previous legal studies including the grading system and an English translation.
8. Certificate demonstrating the candidate's proficiency in Chinese.
9. Completed

CESL recommends that all applicants submit their applications electronically to the following email address: admission_cesl@cupl.edu.cn. However, applicants must bring originals of all required documents bearing the applicant's signature to CESL registration.

Application fee and payment:
The application fee is 800 yuan.

Payment shall be made in cash and in Chinese currency simultaneously with the submission of your application and will not be refunded if your application fails.

Tuition Fees, Living Expenses and Scholarships

Tuition fees: 33,000 yuan per year

Unless CESL has given prior approval, all applicants must pay tuition for the first academic year in whole at the time of registration. If all necessary credits are completed during the first academic year only one year of tuition fees are required.

In addition to tuition fees international students will also need to cover the following expenses:
International students will be provided with accommodation in the students building of the Centre for International Exchange at CUPL's Changping campus. Accommodation fees are 10,500 yuan per academic year, based on two people sharing a room. The figure includes the cost of water and electricity. The cost of renting a room in the area surrounding CUPL's Changping campus is around 2,000 yuan per month.

In addition to rent, the cost of food, books, health insurance, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses is around 2,000 yuan per month.

CSC scholarships

As CUPL is included on the CSC's list of Higher Educational Institutions eligible to accept foreign scholarship students, CESL students may also apply to the China Scholarship Council for scholarships. Admissions Policy

1. CESL carefully evaluates the merits of each application based on the documents submitted and relies on the integrity of the applicant for the authenticity of documentation. Admission to CESL is based on merit. Thus it is recommended and encouraged that all applicants provide CESL with any materials that can demonstrate their ability.

2. CESL aims to foster and promote diversity, creating an environment where students are open-minded and willing to learn from each other.
